WebChromosomal structural abnormalities are the result of chromosome breakage followed by anomalous reconstitution. Rearrangements result spontaneously or are due to inducing agents, such as ionizing radiation. Structural abnormalities can be divided into two categories—balanced and unbalanced. WebIncreased breakage under normal chromosome culture can be seen, and random structural anomalies can sometimes be identified. Molecular analysis is available for these three conditions. However, because of the genetic heterogeneity, a breakage study is usually performed to further confirm the disease before specific DNA testing is offered.
